Among others, historian Gunvor Kerkkonen described this site to be a sacrificial grove ("Offerlunden" in Swedish) from pagan times. The knowledge of the site has been part of oral tradition before it has been described in the literature. According to Kerkkonen there might have been a metallic idol of a goat or an ox in the grove but this is unconfirmed. However, big holes in the ground tell a tale of both legal and illegal treasure hunting. There are places nearby called Odensö ("Odins island") and Torsö ("Thors island") that also point to pagan origins. The site has old oak and linden trees which are uncommon in Finland. Partly because of that the grove has a special atmosphere.
